I truly enjoyed my work at the lab and the many opportunities (like the event below) to give back to the community and engage innovation leaders across the state. Thank you, Chris Hillier, for seeing something in me and allowing me the opportunity to start my journey with New Hanover Regional Medical Center. Thank you, Robert M Shapiro II, for believing in what we were trying to build here in Wilmington and leaning into that change. Thank you, Matt Hernandez, for showing me the ropes and being an incredible mentor and an even better friend. Thank you, Jeff Von Horn, for being my partner-in-crime in Wilmington and facilitating a change to the health landscape here. Thank you, Abdullah Birdsong and Lindsay Kort, for lending your expertise to our group and being transformative leaders and collaborators. Thank you, Hallie Collins, for keeping the team on schedule, for coordinating, for compassion, and your keen eye. Thank you, Matthew Floyd, for helping me to grasp process improvement better and being a great leader and friend. Kranz, for being a thoughtful leader, a tireless visionary, a catalyst for change, and the heartbeat of the Innovation Lab. While I'm still digesting and dealing with the ramifications of the news, I want to say a heartfelt thank you to the many individuals at Novant Health who helped shape my experience. The Novant Health Innovation Lab closed last week, and the team members who helped bring this vision to life, myself included, were laid off.

Not much more difficult to beat than Titanosaurus, it only took two rounds. Being hit by the tentacles did more damage now, and Biollante could do an acid spit, which I managed to avoid by jumping in the screencap: The battle technique was the same, except now Biollante could move, albeit slower than any other monster. The sprite looked pretty damn good for 8-bit. She was immobile and used tentacles to keep me away from the main body, which took the most damage.Īs expected, she turned into her Final Form after taking enough damage. I was quite surprised that Biollante started the fight in her Rose Form. There was no one left to fight now but Biollante, so I eagerly started the battle. I defeated them and was going to fight Titanosaurus, but when I started the fight Titanosaurus was nowhere to be seen, and the game simply went back to the map with the Titanosaurus piece now missing. I defeated it using a combination of tail whips and heat beam spamming. ![]() It would run and jump at a fast pace, constantly swinging its arms around making it hard to get close, and of course it tried to pin me in the corner with as much annoying resolve as ever. This lanky aberration had replaced Gezora, and the new beast was more of a challenge. It attacked by spinning its front tentacle like a corkscrew, and it still had an eye beam, except now it fired from the drill. ![]() It was a bit like fighting Mothra, only it moved with a lot more grace. Moguera's replacement was a flying machine with a slight resemblance to a Pascagoula alien. But this time, their sprites and attack patterns were vastly different. The map was short so it was only a few minutes before I was headed towards a rematch with Gezora and Moguera. The music certainly didn't help, with a mixture of screeching sounds and loud drum beats that sounded like a monster's theme in a horror film.Īfter completing it, I tried to avoid playing through anymore of these levels whenever I could. The only enemies here were Matango Spawn, but as you can see the little bastards were everywhere. The "sky" was the same as the ground, so I I assumed the game was indicating that this level takes place in a cave. I started one of the orange levels, and my eyes were assaulted with a grotesque background of tumorous orange eyes. There was little else to be seen in the blue mountains, so I tried the other level type. I tried other levels of the same type to see if any enemies appear, but there were none. The level went on for three screens, but with no obstacles around I finished it very quickly. It would have been rather pleasant, had I heard it in a normal game. So without having to focus on anything, I listened to the music while walking through the level unopposed. But it didn't bother me much, I never keep up with game points. I should also mention that this was were the point meter started to become glitched beyond comprehension. I quickly noticed something else about this new level: There were no enemies, at all. I thought at first maybe the glitch had affected it, but it looked far too intentional. But there was something odd about the mountains, they had a "shredded paper" look to them. The level resembled a blue mountain range with a blood red planet in the sky. I moved Godzilla over to one of the many blue rock icons that had replaced the jungle icons and started the level. It was like the composer randomly played parts from five different songs with the same instruments. It started out slow and suspenseful, much slower than any song in the game.īut every twelve seconds or so there would be a loud clashing sound, and the tempo changed. ![]() ![]() Like most of the new songs it was hard to describe, I'll try. Pathos' map song was the first new song I heard in the game. Perhaps Toho put Biollante in the game to build excitement for the movie next year, but changed their minds? I tried to rationalize the game's abnormalities any way I could, but this would prove to be futile. "Godzilla vs Biollante" didn't come out until 1989, and this game was made 1988. Instead of Hedorah, it was Biollante.īut that couldn't have been right. I checked the other side of the board to see the new monster. There was one icon that had part of the Jungle Icon shape, but I didn't pay much thought to it. The first thing I noticed was that all the usual level icons had been replaced by a blue rock and some kind of orange honeycomb shape. Pathos was the same as Jupiter in layout, except the board was dark blue rather than green. 7/14/2023 0 Comments Verify email psn![]() How do I link my Harry Potter Fan Club profile and WB Games Account in Hogwarts Legacy? I was only on the 37th floor, but the building was 70-something stories. My view was phenomenal, and we never had elevator issues when I was there. Overall, the building was nice, and the office was adequate but aging. Our lobby was jaw-droppingly beautiful, and we were connected to an ant-farm kind of tunnel system with all kinds of restaurants, coffee shops and stores. There was a lovely plaza outside at ground level full of trees, benches and such. ![]() The water in the toilets would surge up and down during storms, and you could sometimes hear the building creak, all of which was mildly amusing. But the absolute worst part about it? You cannot open a god damned window. In our building at least, there wasn't even a vent you could open to get some tiny bit of fresh air. Regulating air pressure is critical in super tall buildings. Sure, the HVAC was always circulating, but it felt like being in some artificial climate the entire time you were there. Breathing air out of ducts that were last cleaned who-knows-when. I cannot imagine living in a building where I can't open a window even a crack. Posted by SoberHighland at 7:46 PM on Febru I feel a little schadenfreude from this story, but these kinds of folks own multiple homes, and all this is minor crap for them. I mean, if you buy a Bugatti, it's going to be awesome but it's also going to spend a ton of time at the mechanic. When you buy a french chateau it's going to be expensive as hell to maintain and come with all sorts of hassles. Yes, but if you buy a French chateau then you have a French chateau, not a buggy apartment building where you're isolated high above the city, alone and far from help, should anything go wrong with the lifts or the building in general. I don't want to live anywhere where I can't get up and down the stairs under my own power relatively quickly, I don't want to live anywhere where emergency services might be delayed by elevator problems and god knows I don't want to live anywhere which might be badly constructed enough that something would break off a hundred stories up. Also a French chateau isn't going to lose value, whereas any number of chaotic world events could mess up New York real estate as the climate crisis deepens. If you need to repair a French chateau you get to hire cool specialized artisans who know how to repair things from 1750. #Life supertall tower leaks creaks how to if you need to repair a pricey high-rise apartment, you have to hire rip-off contractors. Let me tell you, if I somehow come into millions of dollars, it's the chateau all the way. So it’s nice to have the schadenfreude moment. Other possibility I was thinking was a combination with #2324 Hi that's right! Without a map or clear direction it may become frustrating as more and more impassable paths need remembering for later, while the already satisfying combat will only get better as more power-ups and options are unlocked. Right now the atmosphere and aesthetic of Narita Boy are more than making up for the confusing story and world, but how that balance will shift I can’t predict. Floppy discs unlock power-ups which, in classic Metroidvania style, allow you to backtrack and open previously locked areas, but it’s hard to follow where you’re going and why because the writing is so dense. ![]() There’s a solid mix of mechanics though, with a sliding evade that can also boost you across wider gaps in the air, and the ability to climb certain walls or use the Techno Sword as a shotgun or focused energy beam to defeat enemies. An utter lack of signposting or real direction meant I had to run back and forth to find the right way, when a simple map would have made a major difference. For example, the first one you meet is a giant gladiator called Lord VHS in a dimension known as Beta Maximum Prime, who seems to exist more as a joke on 80s pop culture than anything else.Īs a Metroidvania it suffers because there’s no map, and I wasted a lot of time after first receiving the Techno Sword because all the arrows that had guided me still pointed to the eventual dead end I’d arrived at, and the game actually wanted me to backtrack almost all the way to the very beginning. ![]() So far I’ve not seen enough of it to see how it’s relevant, and even the bosses don’t seem to hold much of a connection to such elements. ![]() To call the story weird would be an understatement, and while Techno Sword is a hundred times better for a title than Narita Boy, the central premise of the game sees you diving into the Creator’s past, specifically his childhood in the Japanese city of Narita. The first half hour or so makes a poor first impression, too, as you guide your protagonist (who is either a young boy playing the game, or sucked into the game, I’m not sure) from one babbling NPC to another until you find the fabled Techno Sword, a powerful weapon that allows you to fight off evil programs and uncover the boyhood memories of the Creator. I find a lot of the writing confounding as characters throw place names and terminology around that has little meaning even in context, and struggles to stick in the mind because it’s all so much text-based jibber-jabber. Narita Boy falls squarely into this category, presenting a stunning world set inside an 80s indie game.Įarly impressions of Narita Boy are that, while it’s gorgeous and super satisfying to play, it’s also confusing both in its map-less layout and its jargon-heavy narrative. What was once upon a time the only real option for game developers, is now a an artistic choice that yields some of the most beautiful and creative worlds available. The things they can do with pixel art these days are pretty amazing. |
